La Lucarne

‘Rencontres internationales cinéma et sport de Montréal’ 2nd Edition

‘La Lucarne’ is a grouping of sport aficionados working on cultural events either as artists or promoters. Its desire: to create events where the worlds of cinema and sport meet, creating strong bonds between cultural and sporting realities.

2006 was an emotionally charged year for all sports fans and more particularly for the thousands of soccer supporters that fervently took to the streets of Montreal during the summer. A sporting and cultural party that allowed for various communities to meet and that demonstrated once again that, in our societies, sport is much more than a game.
La Lucarne, in collaboration with the Cinémathèque québécoise, had gambled on the tie between sport and culture. That is the premise under which the first Rencontres internationales Cinéma et sport de Montréal were created in June 2006. A gamble that has paid off!

From the 20th to the 24th of June 2007, the lucarne team in collaboration with the Cinémathèque québécoise and TV5 is particularly happy to present to you its second edition of these ‘Rencontres’ which are now opening up to different sports.
This year, we invite you to get in the ring, to brandish your fists and grit your teeth. To push yourselves to your limits. To look for that improbable path few men ever find.
« The noble art », boxing, in all of its forms, where hard knocks are delivered and received, thus establishing themselves as part of the many truths that shake our certainties. Cinema has always held a top spot for this sport. It has looked at it with great fascination. It has found in it the dramaturgy on which our humanity was founded. It has always recognized in these modern day warriors our plight of shadow and light.

Of the 18 films selected by la Lucarne, ten are dedicated to boxing and fighting arts. Jean-Christophe Rosé, established today as one of the greatest contemporary directors of films about sports, will present two films: « Sugar Ray Robinson, an American legend » and « Les rois du ring (Kings of the Ring)».
Quebecois and Canadian productions will also be honoured with a strong selection of six movies by Quebecois directors and essential films for the history of cinema such as « Golden Gloves » by Gilles Groulx and «Judoka» by Josef Reeve. La Lucarne is pleased to receive, amongst others, filmmakers Yann Langevin (Guantanamera Boxe) and Richard Gravel (El Ring).

La Lucarne will soon be opening its doors to new exchanges with partners such as the Berlin 11 mm Soccer Film Festival and the Rencontres internationales Cinéma et Sport de Bordeaux (la Lucarne Bordeaux).
